Vermont Civil Unions: Not So Civil After All

On August 10 2007 Scott Graham found out that the State of Vermont Corporate
Tax Department ignores the Civil Union Law -- defining marriage using the
federal definition. Gay couples are forced to pay a minimum $250 tax each
year to the State of Vermont under this practice.

Again! RU12? was smashed!

Hello everyone, it is with sadness that I report yet another smashed window over the weekend here at the Center. We came in Monday morning and discovered that one of the windows in our cyber center was smashed. The window that was targeted had a screen on the outside which prevented the object from coming through both of the windows and potentially damaging the cyber center computers.

Vermont Freedom to Marry

Today, House Speaker Gay Symington and Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin announced at a press conference in Burlington that they have formed a Blue Ribbon Commission to study Vermont’s laws governing same-sex couples. The commission will hold public hearings around the state and will evaluate whether same-sex couple in Vermont should have the same legal right to marry as heterosexuals. Following their evaluation, the commission will make a recommendation to the Legislature.

When Joe Swinyer approached Mountain Pride Media with time on his hands and enthusiasm to match, the Mountain Pride Media Board of Directors put its thinking cap on to find the perfect role for him. Board membership would entail a bit much travel time, but another thing was apparent: Joe’s a talker. He’s incredibly active in and committed to his community and not at all hesitant to speak with groups and individuals, so it all made sense: Joe would be our new Volunteer and Campaign Outreach Coordinator.

Phoenix Campaign

We are calling this the Phoenix Campaign because not only is this a phoenix from the ashes of Out in the Mountains, but it is an enhancement of what services and support Mountain Pride Media can provide to the GLBTQ community.

Since elections in January, MPM Board members have been meeting with GLBTQ Vermonters. What you have told us is that you want OITM back and you even want more interactive ways to connect to members of our community. Our goal is to be a hub through which every member of our community can connect to individuals, resources, events, news, and services.

Our plan has two distinct stages. We start with an interactive calendar and resource database. This stage will also revive The Source, more comprehensive links to GLBTQ-serving non-profits, and advertising modules to ensure we can sustain operations. Stage Two will bring an online version of Out in the Mountains back to life, this time with personals, blogs, and more statewide news coverage. The stages are outlined below and you can clearly see how your donation will help us reconnect the VT GLBTQ community. We will only embark on each stage if the funding and community support is there.
