Chelsea, VT & San Francisco Meet in Music

Clesea, VT & San Francisco Meet in Music

Residents of Chelsea, Vermont were treated to sounds of San Francisco the evening of Thursday, May 5th. Judi Friedman, a fresh, young songwriter/performer from the Bay area was visiting her Vermont cousin as a break from her New England tour. Arrangements were made for an impromptu concert in a friend's barn. Those of us who congregated in the loft, snuggled in our blankets with the night air and starlight drifting through the broad board siding were in for a magical evening.

The evening was late in starting because Judi was wandering up and down the highway trying to determine which of the dirt roads she as supposed to turn up. No one minded waiting. It was a group of hard-core fans. Then, for a $2.00 suggested donation (raising her $99.00 plane fare so she could get to Georgia to play at the Southern Women's Music Festival), Judi played and sang beautifully for two and a half hours.

She entertained in the folk music style, with many original songs that ranged from woman to woman love ballads to a song about the two young women who dared to attend their senior prom together recently. She interweaved some storytelling and humor into her presentation so that the audience felt her warmth and openness. Her lyrics were passionate and fresh. Her singing at times was reminiscent of Joni Mitchell's, but most of the time it was just brand-new and Judi Friedman's.

She left Vermont and headed for Concord, NH, then on to New York City for two engagements. She will be appearing at Southern Women's Music Festival and National Women's Music Festival. Her tape, Arc of Diamonds, is available through Judi c/o Patience and Adventure: Musicworks, 45 Carl Street, San Francisco, CA 94117 or through Ladyslipper. Judi keeps a mailing list to inform her fans of her tours.
