Community Compass is a service of OITM. GLBT organizations from around the state are invited to provide brief — 200 words or less — descriptions of recent or upcoming activities and events. Send your submissions to us by email by the 15th of the month.

AIDS Project of Southern Vermont

Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd, nationally recognized garden designers, horticulturists, partners in North Hill garden, and wonderful supporters of the AIDS Project, will give two benefit presentations this March.

The first talk entitled “North Hill: A Vermont Garden in Four Seasons” will be on Thursday, March 22 at 7 pm at the Second Congregational Church on Hillside Street in Bennington, Vermont. The second talk entitled “First Considerations: Principal Elements of Garden Design” will be on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 pm at the Hooker-Dunham Theater at 139 Main Street in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Tickets are $12 for each talk or $20 for both. Tickets may be available at the door, but to ensure seats please write to the AIDS Project, PO Box 1486, Brattleboro, VT 05302. Please include payment or credit card information and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd started North Hill garden in 1977. It now comprises about seven acres under intense cultivation. Though it has evolved throughout its life, most parts have now reached a youthful maturity. Joe and Wayne are the authors of A Year at North Hill: Four Seasons in a Vermont Garden and Living Seasonally: The Kitchen Garden and the Table at North Hill.

For more information, please call Michael Fannon at the AIDS Project at 802-254-8263. Please join us in supporting the AIDS Project with an informative garden talk.

National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association

Vermont members of the New England Chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association met for brunch on February 11 and will be getting together again on March 11 at Five Spice Café. The group will continue to meet on the second Sunday of each month at locations around the state.

The next full chapter meeting will be held in Northampton, Mass. on March 3. Contact Chapter President Barbara Dozetos for more information.

Please check the OITM Calendar for details on events and the Source Professional listings for contact information.

The NLGJA works within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of lesbian and gay issues and opposes newsroom bias toward gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, and all other minorities. The national organization’s Web site is www.nlgja.org. Anyone who supports the mission of NLGJA is invited to attend events or join the organization.

Pride VT

Pride is excited to announce that the theme for this June’s events and festivities is “A Family Reunion.” See our insert for more details.

If you have been out to 135 Pearl on a recent Tuesday night, you may have seen Lady Zeno leading the crowd through her unique interpretations of Bingo (of course, we know it as Zingo.) Zingo is every Tuesday night starting at 8 pm until the Waterfront Festival in June.

After a snowed-in night of bowling last month, let’s hope for more congenial weather Wednesday, March 7, as we roll into Yankee Lanes, 17 Mountain View Drive, Colchester, just off I-89. The evening begins at 9 and will go until 11, with part of the proceeds going to Pride. Contact Kenny Hirschmann for more information, 802-288-1588.

If you find yourself at Womyn’s Night at 135 Pearl Friday, March 2, look for your friendly Pride representative conducting a 50/50 raffle.

Pride will be having two meetings in March. They will take place Tuesdays, March 13 and 27 from 7 to 9 pm at the McClure Multi-Generational Center, 241 N. Winooski Street, Burlington. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to come out and lend their ideas to the planning process.

For more information, please contact Brian Cina at 802-859-9238.

We would like to thank Denny, Jim, Elizabeth, Joe, Peter, Dan, Euan, Carrie, Bennett, and Linda for stopping in to help with the January issue stuffing. Come and help get Out In The Mountains into the community. We are still seeking a volunteer to deliver packaged copies of OITM to the Richmond Post Office on the Friday following the stuffing. If you are interested in helping out with the stuffing in any way, email us at circulation@mountainpridemedia.org

Mountain Pride Media is pleased to announce that the next stop on our Green Mountain Tour will be Saturday, March 24, at the Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vermont. This stop will be hosted by The Alliance at Vermont Law School. Check the ad on the back page or on our web site for directions and times. Please plan on joining us. We only have a few more stops left to complete our county-by-county tour of Vermont. You can find more information about the Green Mountain Tour and other MPM initiatives on our newly-redesigned web site, www.mountainpridemedia.org.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hunger Mountain Co-op and the New England Culinary Institute for their generous contributions of food for our February 10 celebration of the 15th Anniversary of OITM at the Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier. We also extend a special thanks to OITM founders David Ryan and Howdy Russell for sharing their story of the founding of the paper at this reception, and past Editors Deb Lashman and Barb Dozetos for their participation in this celebration. And a special thank you is also extended to Joseph Watson for organizing the display of OITM and community artifacts, and for his visionary commitment to preserving the history of OITM and the GLBTQ movement in Vermont.

We also want to remind you that your shopping makes a big difference to our organization when you shop on our web site. We have partnered with several affiliates who donate a portion of every sale made from our website back to MPM. If you haven’t checked out our Shopping Page, log onto www.mountainpridemedia.org today.

Finally, Mountain Pride Media would like to invite you to get more involved in 2001. With a new editor in place and the kick-off of our 15th anniversary celebration, this is a great time to join us. We have numerous volunteer opportunities available; access that information on our web site. If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to help make a difference in your community, consider contacting us today.
