Community Compass is a service of OITM. GLBT organizations from around the state are invited to provide brief — 200 words or less — descriptions of recent or upcoming activities and events. Send your submissions to us by email by the 15th of the month.

A Different Kind of Drag Show

The Vermont Queer Archives at the RU12? Community Center is researching the history of drag in Vermont in preparation for an upcoming exhibition. We are putting together a timeline and collecting information on drag kings, queens and everyone in between from "who knows when" to the present. If you have memories, memorabilia, or just a good story, we would love to hear from you! Email us at archives@ru12.org, or leave a message for Meg at 802-860-RU12.

New Website For EVT

Thanks to a grant from Verizon, Equality VT has updated its website - www.equalityvt.org! Check out what we have added. Our new page, "Vermont Laws and Legal Resources," lists valuable resources, such as laws that cover sexual orientation, HIV/AIDS and gender identity resources, and the Vermont Diversity Resource Guide. In addition, we show links to the VT Secretary of State's website for information related to civil unions and to the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defendersâ website, which includes GLBT legal rights. We have also completed our FAQ page which has answers frequently asked questions and provides website links to other GLBT organizations. We are always looking for more links, so let us know if we've missed something of interest to you.
The Vermont Legislature will be starting its second term on January 6th, 2004. Equality VT will be holding Visibility Day at the Statehouse on January 30th, 2004. Visibility Day is an opportunity to introduce ourselves to legislators and let them know who we are and what our organizations are all about. Please contact us if your organization would like to join Equality VT for the day. We welcome suggestions as to how to make the day as productive as possible.
Our phone number has changed to 802-496-3345, ext. 2.

Outright VT Wants You!

It's that time of year again, the leaves have fallen off the trees, the ground is freezing and the chill in the air takes your breath away. Unless you can afford to invest in happy lights, this onset of winter can also be a bummer of a time. Well guess what? Nothing puts a smile on your face or gives you that warm fuzzy feeling better then hanging out with a bunch of queer youth!
Outright Vermont is looking for a few good queers to join our volunteer team. We need help in our office, with our events, and even folks to facilitate our famous Friday Night Groups. We have a fabulous training coming up in January, so now is the time to get involved and make a difference in a young person's life. The time commitment is flexible to jibe with your schedule and for now we just need help in our Burlington location. So if you frequent the Queen city or live near it, we want you! Details on the variety of roles can be found at our website: www.outrightvt.org If you are interested please email the staff at info@outrightvt.org or call us at (802) 865-9677.

Queer Family Friendly

We like to say that R.U.1.2? is your community center, and we at R.U.1.2? are committed to making your community center a multi-generational space welcoming to queer people of all ages. During the community focus groups conducted this summer, we identified the need for more programming for LGBT families and their children. We'd like to let you know about what we already have planned and also ask you for your input for future programming.
Starting in December, two new groups designed to offer support and fellowship to parents and families will be meeting at the center:
Starting December 4, there will be a support group meeting on the first Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm open to all parents and families. This group will be co-sponsored and co-facilitated by Vermont Federation of Families, an organization that offers support to families and parents of children with emotional challenges and mental illnesses.
Starting December 18, there will be a support group meeting on the third Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm that will be specifically focused on LGBT parents and families and the issues and challenges they face. We are interested in involving an LBGT parent or family caregiver to co-facilitate this group. If you would like to take on a facilitative role, please contact the center (802.860.7812 or thecenter@ru12.org) for more details.
