Garden
at North Hill Benefit
Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd, partners in
North Hill, will open their extensive garden in Readsboro, Vermont this
summer to benefit the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont. The garden at North
Hill will be open on Wednesday June 30, Saturday July 31 & Tuesday August
31, from 9 am - 3 pm.
Nationally acclaimed garden designers and
horticulturists Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd started the garden at North
Hill in 1977. It now comprises about seven acres under intense cultivation,
surrounded by a larger tract of mature hardwoods of beech and maple. Though
it has evolved in size and dimension throughout its life, most parts have
now reached a youthful maturity.
The mission of the garden has become to grow
as many species as might be hardy in a climate that experiences winter lows
of -20 degrees (F). Significant individual collections within the garden
include plantings of heathers and dwarf conifers, antique and species roses,
bamboos, unusual perennials and annuals, an extensive rock and bog garden,
a large collection of hybrid deciduous magnolias, and many tender conservatory
plants used as components of the garden in summer.
Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd are the authors
of Living Seasonally: The Kitchen Garden and Table at North Hill,
and three other books. The garden at North Hill has been featured in numerous
newspapers and magazines, including Horticulture and The New York Times.
If you are interested in touring North Hill,
please request your tickets online and get an e-mail confirmation of your
desired date and time. Go to: www.AIDSProjectSouthernVermont.org
If you do not have access to the Internet,
you may request up to 4 tickets for your desired date and time by mail.
Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and mail request to North
Hill/APSV, PO Box 1486, Brattleboro, VT 05302.
Your donation AIDS Project of Southern
Vermont will be requested at the garden. Please make your check payable
to the AIDS Project. Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
The mission of the AIDS Project is to
provide services to people affected by HIV and AIDS and to prevent the transmission
of HIV. Our services are free to all those whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS.
Handstands
for Gay and Bi Men
T.H.E. Men's Program (Total HIV Education),
a Brattleboro-based community-building program for gay and bisexual men
will perform Men Seeking Handstands, a performance of handstands, each
dedicated to a gay or bisexual man. The event, a performance art piece/publicity
stunt, will happen on Friday June 4 from 5:30-8:30 PM on the Hooker-Dunham
alley (139 Main St.). The performance will be offered as part of Gallery
Walk in Brattleboro Vermont in celebration of Gay Pride Month. Come celebrate
your favorite gay or bisexual man by dedicating and/or performing a handstand.
To dedicate a handstand, to volunteer,
or for more info, call Glenn Johnson, program coordinator at 802-254-8263
x 107, email men@sover.net, or just
show up to the event.
T.H.E. Men's Program works in the greater
southern Vermont region to reduce the risk of HIV between men who have
sex with men. We build communities of men - men who increasingly care
about each other, work together for community health and practice HIV
prevention behaviors. We offer social events, a free monthly newsletter,
workshops, and volunteer opportunities for men who have sex with men.
Ready, Set, GO!
To the R.U.1.2? Community Center Grand
Opening, that is!
It's happening on Saturday, June 12th
from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the brand spanking new R.U.1.2? Queer Community
Center at 34 Elmwood Avenue in Burlington, Vermont across the street from
the Post Office, less than a block from the Church Street Marketplace.
R.U.1.2? has been working towards our vision
of a real Community Center for the last five years. Well, this year the
vision has become a reality, and we’re throwing a party to celebrate.
Please join us. Admission is free, donations to support the Center are
encouraged!
Ready, Set, GO! will have very special
guests: The House of LeMay, in their first ever R.U.1.2? performance;
Gregory Douglass; and, in honor of the Discover Jazz Festival, local Latin
jazz favorites Conjunto Consolidor.
Our Celebration will feature the Grand
Opening of the David Bohnett Cyber Center and the inaugural exhibitions
at the new Center of the Vermont Queer Archives. The Archives will be
presenting a selection of items from the collections with an emphasis
on the role of women in queer history. Items on view include magazines,
posters, and buttons from the 1980s through the present. Queer women in
Vermont have played many different roles in the organization and culture
of our community, from the arts to politics. From separatist communities
to Vermont pride organizations, the Vermont Queer Archives collections
can tell part of the story of the queer women's presence in the state.
If you have items to donate to the Archives, bring them along!
Plus there's much more! We'll have
a summertime celebration barbecue - bring a potluck dish to share, burgers
and dogs (both meat and veggie) plus drinks will be provided. For the
kid in all of us, faerie tales from the Rainbow Library. Face-painting
by Winnie Looby. 5-minute chair massages by Sergio Coralles, R.U.1.2?'s
in-house massage therapist. There'll be tours of the Center and, as always,
volunteer opportunities!
And don't forget - Khristian and Christopher
can register you to vote! The elections are coming, we need to be educated,
dedicated and activated. Let's make sure that we defeat the Right and
end all attempts to write discrimination into the U.S. Constitution.
