SafeSpace News & Training

SafeSpace is a social change and social service organization working to end physical, sexual and emotional violence in the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) people. We provide information, support, referrals, and advocacy to LGBTQQ survivors of violence and offer education and outreach programs in the wider community. Our office is open Monday and Thursday from 9a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
As SafeSpace enters fiscal year three, we would like to thank all of you who have contributed and supported us in our second year. As you all know, non-profits such as SafeSpace could not exist without dedicated help and support from volunteers and community members.       Additionally, our Newsletter and Annual Report are available for those interested. Again, many thanks and here's to another grand year ahead!
We're co-sponsoring a training with the Women's Rape Crisis Center for those interested in making a difference and joining us in our efforts against violence, The training takes place on seven days during the weeks of September 20-October 4. There will be a total of 26 hours of training for direct-service volunteers. Those interested are encouraged to call Connie Beal at 863-0003 (SafeSpace) or Jim Leahy 864-0555 (WRCC) for more information regarding the fall training.

Michael Cunningham Reads for So. VT AIDS Project

Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Michael Cunningham will read selections from his works following a gourmet dinner on Friday, October 1 at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center to benefit the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont. Cunningham, whose novel The Hours won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, will offer insights into his craft, including a Q&A opportunity, and sign copies of his books. According to Vanity Fair "Michael Cunningham dazzles in his inspired novel The Hours..." and USA Today calls his latest success "a smashing literary tour de force" that will "make you jump up from the sofa and look at life and literature in new ways..."
His novel A Home at the End of the World was published in 1990 to wide acclaim and was followed by Flesh and Blood in 1995. His work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Redbook, Esquire, The Paris Review, The New Yorker, Vogue, and Metropolitan.
As part of this special evening, guests will be able to view a major exhibition of Andy Warhol's work from the private collection of Jon Gould. Jon Gould was Andy Warhol's companion in the early 1980s. Before he died of AIDS in 1986, Gould amassed a large collection of Warhol's work. This show will include artwork that has never before been on public view.
The Brattleboro Museum is offering a one-year museum membership to people attending the Michael Cunningham reading for an additional $20 for an individual membership or $35 for a dual/family membership, reflecting a 50 percent discount on the regular membership rates for the museum!
The dinner with Michael Cunningham will begin at 6:30pm with the reading to follow. Tickets are available at $100 per person. For reservations and information, contact the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont at : mff@sover.net or 802 254-4444.
The AIDS Project of Southern Vermont is a regional AIDS service organization that provides direct services to people living with HIV/AIDS, and HIV prevention services to those most at risk in Windham, Bennington, and southern Windsor counties. Founded by volunteers in 1988 as a grassroots, community based group, the AIDS Project now fills an important statewide role in making sure that Vermont's fight against the AIDS epidemic is strong and effective.
